Are Universities preparing us for the world we live in?

Universities have always claimed to shape the leaders of tomorrow. The problem is that tomorrow now arrives faster than most universities can adapt. We are living and working longer than any previous generation. Intelligent automation is reshaping every industry. Careers are no longer linear, and expertise expires at an unprecedented rate. Yet our educational institutions continue to act as if the world is stable, predictable and slow.
The uncomfortable truth is that universities are not built for rapid reinvention. They are built for academic continuity. But continuity is a threat not an advantage. Employers need leaders who can navigate radical demographic and technological transformation concurrently and do it over and over again. The person graduating today may need to retrain five or six times over a lifetime. They may lead teams that span five generations. They will almost certainly work alongside, and possibly for, increasingly capable AI systems. Traditional curricula do not equip them for this reality.
Longevity alone demands a total rethink of what "education" means. We can't expect people to study intensively for three or four years at the start of their lives and then rely on that knowledge for the next six decades. Age and experience have lost their advantage. A 60-year working life needs continuous, flexible, modular learning. It needs learning that adapts to the worker, not the other way round. Yet most universities still operate on a model designed for the industrial age: front-load knowledge early, then release people into the world to apply it until they retire.
Intelligent automation amplifies the gap. AI is not a technical add-on; it changes how decisions are made, how work is organised, how companies create value and how individuals remain employable. But universities tend to isolate AI in specialist departments rather than integrating it into the core of business, law, economics, finance or human resources. And are universities integrating AI instructors into their teaching staff?
If universities want to remain relevant, they need to redesign the fundamentals. That means embedding longevity and intelligent automation into every programme, not as electives but as central organising principles. It means treating learning as a lifelong service rather than a one-off product. It means preparing students, of all ages, for a world in which personal reinvention is not an exception but a necessity. And it needs academics who realise that they too can be replaced by AI.
Some institutions are starting to move in the right direction: offering mid-career pathways, shorter credentials, hybrid learning and partnerships with industry. But progress is patchy, and often too slow. The world is not waiting. Organisations need people who can adapt now, not ten years from now when committees finally agree on revising the syllabus.
Longevity and intelligent automation are the two forces that will have the greatest impact on productivity, competitiveness and human wellbeing over the next fifty years. Universities that treat them as optional extras will simply fall behind.
So the question higher education must answer is simple:
Are we designing learning for the world as it is becoming, or the world as it once was?
Right now, for most institutions, the answer remains the latter. It is time that changed.
